Yasmin Birth Control-Some Facts

yasmin birth controlYasmin birth control is one of the options women who choose the birth control pill select. Manufactured by Bayer, Yasmin is often confused with the oral contraceptive, Yaz, also manufactured by Bayer.

In fact, the two oral contraceptives contain the same drug; however, there is a slight difference in the dosage.

Yasmin contains 28 tablets, 21 of which are active and out of the 28 tablets you get with Yaz, 24 are active. It comes in a generic version that won’tĀ  be available until sometime in 2011.

Yasmin birth control is a combination of progesterone and estrogen and it works by preventing ovulation.

When taken correctly, oral contraceptives, are the most effective form of birth control without surgical intervention.

Moreover, only about one percent of women who take oral contraceptives become pregnant each year.

Although most women can take the birth control pill, including Yasmin, safely, there are some women who should not take the pill. In addition, women who have certain conditions should not take this drug.

Women who have a history of heart attack or stroke should not take Yasmin. If you have had certain cancers, such as breast cancer, you should not take any birth control pills. It is important for women to discuss this with their doctors, get an examination, and provide a full medical history before making the final decision concerning oral contraception.

Many birth control pills have side effects and most of these are not serious. Non serious side effects of Yasmin include nausea, vomiting, and bleeding between periods.

Women who use this may also experience tender breasts and weight gain. Some of the side effects, such as nausea and vomiting may subsideĀ  or lessen within the first few months of use.
