IUD Birth Control

A very popular contraceptive method is the Intrauterine Device, otherwise known as the IUD birth control. This device is made to fit within the uterine cavity in which a string hangs down within the upper section of the vagina. There are a couple types of IUDs. One type is called the progesterone hormone IUD and the other is the copper IUD. Both types have their pros and cons. In order to make sure this contraceptive is right for you, consult with your physician and take a look at the following information.

IUD Birth Control Benefits

  • Sex can be enjoyed without having to be interrupted
  • Unlike the birth control pill, you no longer have to remember to take a pill
  • It is not expensive compared to other contraceptives
  • There is no waiting period for its effectiveness. Effects are immediate after placement
  • Once it is fitted, it remains effective for up to five years
  • The failure rate is approximately 1 to 2 percent
  • No hormone level shifts, therefore the side effects that you would have had with pills, does not occur with the IUD method
  • Very simple and easy to use. The only maintenance involved is to check the string periodically
  • Once taken out, your fertility levels will return immediately
  • No known side effects
  • Your partner will remain unaware about the IUDs placement

IUD Birth Control Disadvantages

  • Does not protect against HIV or other viruses, so a condom must be used for this type of safety
  • Only a physician or nurse is able to insert or remove the IUD
  • Periods may become heavy and more painful. This usually subsides within a few months
  • The uterus may get injured during the fitting
  • There is a risk of infection after insertion
  • If pregnancy occurs, that means the IUD is not in its proper place and must be removed immediately
  • Can increase risks of pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to sterilization.

If the IUD is placed correctly and it is properly maintained, this birth control method is one of the most highly effective.

Weigh the risks and benefits so you can make an informed decision if this is the right birth control method for you.
