There are different types of birth control and choosing the contraception method you want depends on your individual needs and medical history.

If your need is to prevent unwanted or unplanned pregnancies then the pill could possibly be the best option.

But if you are looking for protection from sexually transmitted diseases, then you will have to look at other options that are available.

Let’s look at the contraception options that are available.

  • Male and Female condom
  • Diaphragm with spermicide
  • Cervical cap with spermicide
  • Sponge with spermicide
  • Spermicide alone
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Contraceptive patch
  • Vaginal contraceptive ring
  • Hormone shots
  • IUD
  • Periodic abstinence
  • Surgical sterilization male and female

The barrier methods which include diaphragm, the cervical cap, contraceptive sponges and condoms prevent the sperm from getting into the uterus and fertilizing the egg. You must use these methods every time you have sex, for them to be effective.

Pills are made of two hormones estrogen and progestin. Certain pills types do not contain estrogen and are known as progestin only pills. Pills that do not contain estrogen are recommended for women who are breast feeding.

The pills work by preventing ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus, which prevent the sperm from traveling to the egg. These pills come in 21 and 28 day packs and women need to take them every day, to be effective.

Hormonal shots and patches work on the same basis as the pill. The shots are known to be effective for a period of three months. IUD which is known as intrauterine device has to be inserted by the doctor and it is normally recommended for women who already have a child.

All these different types of birth control pills have their individual pros and cons and you would need to consult the doctor before deciding on the appropriate contraception method.
